Gretta & David – Perth Wedding Photography

perth wedding photography

Gretta & David hail from Tasmania so their Margaret River wedding was an intimate affair with family and friends traveling from across the country, or as Dave put it traveling to the most remote city in the country then driving an extra 3hrs! It was fitting that Dave & Gretta got married right on the beach (Dave proposed to Gretta on Shelley Beach at Cape Naturalist, their favorite beach), Gretta & David wanted their wedding to be a fun, beautiful beach wedding, really just like a big party….. and the White Elephant Cafe, lanterns, fairy lights and a gorgeous sunset set the perfect scene. It was such a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful day, We’re super excited for you both with the the pregnancy & we hope the rest of the evening was an absolute blast! Much love and appreciation, J&K

Travels with Merge – Cambodia Part 2

Cambodia Photography

So here we are again, talking about holidays. We get so super busy during the “Wedding Season” photographing our fabulous clients every weekend but we still enjoy getting out and about with our cameras when we take our well earned rests. Previously I blogged images from Phnom Penh and the south of Cambodia, today I felt like sharing images from the beautiful but still commercial hub of Battambang.

Battambang is well known for being the leading rice-producing province of the country , its also home to some of the best preserved French colonial architecture in Cambodia. Villagers still travel about on hand pump rail cars to tend to their fields due to the amount of unexploded mines still scattered about the countryside, a stark reminder of Cambodia’s dark past.

While in Battambang………

I learned how to cook that Fabulous Fish Amok Curry I’m so addicted to

Got to watch rice noodles being made

Toured the countryside by hand pump rail car

Learned that steps are my nemesis and

Discovered that fish and shrimp paste “Factories” in Cambodia….  A. Are really just rotting fish and salt in lots and lots of barrels and B. SMELL LIKE NOTHING ELSE ON EARTH!! (nothing you would ever want to encounter again that is!)

Keep checking in for Part 3 soon! Jx

DIY Wedding flowers

DIY Wedding flowers

So as some of you may know, Karolina got married in December. During the planning of her Perth wedding we had full intentions of blogging about the whole process from her perspective as a bride and mine as a bridesmaid… obviously that didn’t happen! Turns out there’s actually a lot to do when planning a wedding, haha!  Time has flown by (as did the actual night!), and this next installment is a little advice about DIY wedding flowers…

Florists do an amazing job, what they do is a art and well worth the cost. But, for Karolina’s big day her mum (who has a huge passion for flowers and has actually always wanted to work in that industry) volunteered to put the bouquets and reception flowers together. In case you didn’t know there are a whole bunch of Flower wholesalers in West Leederville (Northwood St) that you can go visit and pre order your blooms from. Of course you can only get what will be in season at the time so this option is probably more for the Brides that are not too bothered about what flowers they have. You also need to have the time, patience and know how to put the bouquets together. Our bridesmaid bouquets of Baby’s breath were a cinch but Karolina’s was a little more tricky.

We’ve had quite a few brides who’s mum’s have done their wedding flowers, they’ve all turned out fantastic and we’re sure they’ve been a money saver for the day. Check out Cleo & Boz Sayers wedding flowers below, Cleo’s mum did such a fantastic job!

So, If you’re looking at doing DIY Flowers here are our little hints:

Be flexible – don’t get too hung up on what sort of flowers you want

Try lots of different heights and textures in a bouquet

Keep it simple, less is more

Research what will be in season

And finally, Be prepared for the time involved.

Until next time… happy wedding planning! Jx

Travels with Merge – Cambodia Part 1

Travel Photography

Continuing on with the idea of blogging about our travels (when we’re not busy with our Perth wedding photography!) I’ve recently booked my holiday for the middle of this year. We always take our well earned breaks during winter months when weddings in Perth are a little less frequent. My partner Justin and I will be traveling to Vietnam, Laos & Thailand and I’m super excited! It got me reminiscing about my trip to Cambodia back in 2010. Cambodia is a country of contrasts… with people who have unbreakable spirits and infectious optimism. I toured thru a large portion of the country both on my own and as part of a group and although I did end up getting quite sick (travel tip – never, ever use water purification tablets in Cambodia – they don’t work!) it was an emotionally rewarding trip and an amazing country. So much of this country is still 3rd world, its eye opening. A large percentage of the population is under the age of 16, not hard to believe with so many people having been killed by the Khmer Rouge (a horrifying part of this country’s dark history), it seemed like every person I met had lost a loved one during Pol Pots rule.

I have so many images from the amazing country that I really felt that I should break them down into areas… so this first selection of images is from Phnom Penh and a little of the south of Cambodia.

During my travels thru Phnom Penh, Kampot & Sihanoukville……

I became addicted to a fabulous  curry dish called Fish Amok (YUM)

Found that there are lots of little french influences everywhere

Discovered the only way to cross the road is to make eye contact and run!

Felt truly touched by the sad stories behind Tuol Sleng & the killing fields (I will never forget it)

Got chased down the street (several times!)

and was baffled by the fact that people in Cambodia seem to find motorbikes an incredibly comfortable place to sleep?

Stay tuned for part 2 soon! Jx

The elusive perfect bridesmaids dress….

BHLDN-Bridesmaids-dresses

So as some of you may know, Karolina recently got married. During the planning of her Perth wedding we had full intentions of blogging about the whole process from her perspective as a bride and mine as a bridesmaid… obviously that didn’t happen! Turns out there’s actually a lot to do when planning a wedding, haha!  Its been nearly 3 months now  and I’ve finally got around to putting some thoughts onto paper (in actual fact onto the blog) and this first installment will be about our search for the perfect Bridesmaid dress.

First things first… we’re fussy.

We’ve seen almost every type of Bridesmaid dress you could imagine in our years as Perth wedding photographers so we’re very hard to please. Straight away we discounted out any conventional bridesmaid dress stores and instead targeted Claremont, Mt Lawley & Subiaco for cocktail dresses that were a little different (our original idea was for yellow or miss matched pastel coloured dresses – but with only 2 bridesmaids). There are some great options in these areas but not quite what we are after.

We then took our search online and fell in love with a site called BHLDN (www.BHLDN.com), their dresses are soft, sweet, dreamy and very vintage – well worth a look if you are planning a Vintage, Rustic, Boho or miss matched style wedding!

BHLDN-Bridesmaids-dresses Untitled-1

Although these dresses were right up our alley, after trying on a few we again decided to take one more look around in Perth. To our surprise we found 2 lovely yellow (Karolina’s wedding theme colour) dresses in Innaloo which we then took to the Fabulous Fiona Dixen Custom Milliner who proceeded to apply some vintage French lace down the sides of the dresses and made us custom hair flowers out of the same lace that just brought the whole look together.

In the end Karolina went with her gut about wanting to have yellow dresses for us girls but still managed to keep them looking a little vintage and one of a kind but customizing them with the lace.

My advice: Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. Don’t be afraid to try many different styles, colours and patterns on your bridesmaids – one colour or style wont necessarily suit all. Don’t be afraid to customize a dress a little more to make it individual & remember that miss matching styles or colours can give a new dimension to your bridal party. Much Love, Jodie

The real value of wedding photography

Vintage wedding flowers

A few months ago we contributed to the Polka Dot Bride Wisdom, an offshoot of the original Polka Dot Bride wedding blog. We decided to write a post about why wedding photography costs what it does, just to give people a little insight into why photographers charge what they do.  Recently we thought that we should re post the article ourselves on our own site, so here it is…. Enjoy! J&K

The real value of wedding photography

Most newly engaged couples are unfamiliar with wedding photography, and pretty much all couples will at some point wonder: Why do those photographers charge so much?

You’ve heard it before:  photography is one area of your wedding that you don’t want to skimp on, because you’ll have those pictures forever.  You spend thousands making sure you will look perfect on your wedding day, hair, makeup, wedding dress, suits, cars & beautiful flowers. Shouldn’t the capturing of that perfect beauty & those heartfelt moments be as important as the creation of it? Most couples will realize this and so they venture forth to hire a photographer to do just that, but, the actual cost of photography can be a hard pill to swallow if you have never planned a wedding before.

55

Budget is a huge part of every wedding; according to online sources the average Australian couples are spending between $20,000 – $40,000 on their weddings (and there are now many couples who are spending a lot less than that with all the fabulous DIY weddings going on). People place a certain value on different things for their day, for example a couple will expect to spend a vast majority of their wedding budget on venue, food & drinks while perhaps only a smaller portion of their budget on things like hair, makeup or perhaps flowers. Photography is a service that can sometimes be perceived as a lesser expense, mostly because people don’t see the value in what is being created or the real amount of time being spent on their day.

Often, when it comes to wedding photography, you get what you pay for. Since the advent of the digital camera everyone thinks they are a photographer, but are they really? There is an art and a skill required to capture the moment. A professional wedding photographer will know the in’s and out’s of a wedding day, their equipment and how to create or when to wait for & capture magic. You are not just paying for a service but a photographer’s expertise, their eye and their art.

romantic pre wedding photos perth Araluen Botanical Garden wedding

Did you know that a photographer will spend an average of 40 to 50hrs working on each individual wedding? That’s right 40 to 50 hours! Believe it or not, taking the pictures on your wedding day is probably one of the shortest things on the “to do” list, it’s by far the most important but not the longest. Included in those 40 to 50 hours are things like:  Planning, Itinerary design, travel, meeting with clients, emails, invoicing, photographing the actual event, culling through images, image processing, uploading images, archiving, photoshopping, blogging, social media sharing, administrative tasks, print ordering, album designing and more. For every hour of actual shooting time on a wedding a photographer may estimate about four hours of post processing work (uploading, backup, culling, processing, basic photoshoping, blogging, DVD burning, gallery upload etc). So, if a photographer shot a 7 hour wedding, they may leave the wedding day with approximately 28 hours of work ahead of them.  This doesn’t include e-mails, consultations, album design, album edits, equipment preparation and much more.

083

Now that you’ve seen the hours, ask yourself this:  How much do you expect to be paid for 40 to 50 hours or more of work?  Add on top of that the cost of the photographer’s expertise, artistic perspective and experience. You also want to consider the cost of the professional products they are offering, their professional affiliations, their insurance (such as Public liability), their travel on the day and photography equipment (like cameras, flashes, lenses, tripods, memory cards, computers & hard drives). If you expect your photographer to arrive at your wedding with a professional camera kit & backups (sometimes totalling between $10,000 – $20,000 worth of equipment) should you not be expecting to pay a professional price?

The truth of the matter is every photographer has their own reasons for their prices.  They can charge whatever they feel their craft, their products and their time are worth. Our simple aim is to inform you, the engaged couple, of the number one reason why wedding photography costs what it does, TIME. So when you allocate your photography budget and start to look at photographer’s prices keep in mind that 40 – 50 hours of their time as well as their expertise, eye and their artistic perspective is what you are really paying for when you hire them. Louise & Troy Chapman – Kings Park Frasers Wedding

Kings park wedding photography

We first met with Louise and Troy back in January 2012, this lovely couple met in Merredin when Louise decided to take a job in the country. The whole day was a laugh with this huge bridal party and big Italian family (so big it filled up the Frasers State Reception Center!), Louise and Troy even had a special guest come all the way from Italy for their wedding and she brought them their own personal wedding wishes from the Pope! It was also a lovely idea to go and surprise Louise’s grandad at home after the service (he couldn’t make it to the wedding) and although we couldn’t hear what was being said it looked like he was giving Troy some sound marriage advice!  Thanks for a fun day, we hope you guys had a blast at the reception (& enjoyed the Pinot Grigio and lemoncello!). Much love and appreciation J&K

A beautiful Bride

Karolina-Wedding

It’s so surreal being on the other side of the lens. Karolina’s wedding on Sunday was just perfect, and although I didn’t get to take very many pics on the day (being in the bridal party) I did get one or two quick shots before we left for the service… what a stunner! Enjoy Jx
